49ers' Deebo Samuel not expected to participate in offseason work pending new contract

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel will not participate in any of the team's on-field offseason workouts after requesting a new contract, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

What It Means:

The prolific 2019 class of wide receivers will be entering the final years of their respective contracts, and with the recent blockbuster contracts for veterans Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill, the young stars (including Samuel) have begun the process of negotiating for new deals with better compensation. After an odd, down-year in 2020 that saw Samuel operating close to the line of scrimmage, his production skyrocketed in 2021, with the star athlete asserting himself as the engine of the team's offense.

Samuel totaled 1,770 yards from scrimmage and a whopping 14 total touchdowns in 2021, helping to lead the 49ers into the NFL playoffs as the team's top receiver and at times (due to injuries in the backfield) as their lead running back. While the 49ers also have 2020 first-round pick Brandon Aiyuk and star tight end George Kittle under contract, the team seems to have little other choice than to meet Samuel's requests and negotiate a new contract for the do-it-all receiver.
