Trey Lance confirmed as 49ers' starter

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is the new starter, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed.

What It Means:

"This is Trey’s team," Shanahan confirmed Tuesday. "That’s nothing against Jimmy [Garoppolo]. We made that decision a year ago. We’re not going to mess around with that anymore. Jimmy understands that fully. He’s a big guy. Nothing against him. It’s a business decision." The 49ers took Lance with the third overall pick in 2021, but the rookie only played in six games and made two starts. In those two starts, Lance completed 59.6% of his passes for 441 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, and he rushed 24 times for 120 yards with another score.

Lance is currently the QB12 in numberFire's preseason rankings. Our models project him for 3,761.5 passing yards, 28.31 touchdowns, and 12.5 interceptions, plus 114.4 carries for 500.0 yards and 5.54 touchdowns.
