Smith: Texans "are going to work" to get more opportunities for Dameon Pierce
Houston Texans head coach Lovie Smith told reporters Monday that the team is "going to work" on getting running back Dameon Pierce more opportunities.
Pierce emerged from the 2022 preseason as one of the biggest breakout candidates heading into Week 1, but played behind veteran back Rex Burkhead for most of Sunday's tie against the Indianapolis Colts. Smith noted that the team will continue to work with him as a developing pass-catcher and blocker, which would help him remain on the field on a more consistent basis.
Pierce still managed to compile 33 yards on 11 carries in Week 1, but fell behind Burkhead's 14 carries for 40 yards. He also drew just 1 target, which paled in comparison to Burkhead's 8. Pierce will likely remain a touchdown-or-bust type of fantasy player until he can garner a higher share of the Texans' backfield opportunities.
