Ryan Russell expected to open Cowboys' season as starter
Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Ryan Russell could open the season at starting left end, Bryan Broaddus of the Cowboys' website expects.
Broaddus has just a "gut" feeling right now, but it's simple logic; the Cowboys are trying to patch something together with both starters Demarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory suspended the first four weeks of the season. Russell played in just one game last season as a fifth-round rookie. Benson Mayowa is expected to start at right end, with rookie Charles Tapper also in a rotational role.
The Cowboys ranked 19th in Adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points (NEP) per play last season. Our algorithms project the Dallas defense to muddle its way through to 33 sacks through 2016.
