Joey Bosa and Chargers in contract standoff

The San Diego Chargers and rookie defensive end Joey Bosa have not talked since Thursday, Pro Football Talk reports.

What It Means:

Still not under contract, Bosa has yet to report for camp. The primary sticking points in negotiations are both the use of offset language in the fully-guaranteed deal and whether Bosa's signing bonus will be paid in full this year. Bosa has reportedly been willing to accept one compromise or the other, but wants the Chargers to meet him halfway. They have been unwilling to do that, and as a result the third overall selection of this year's NFL Draft began his first NFL training camp at home. Second-year defensive lineman Darius Philon has been taking the bulk of snaps at end in Bosa's absence.

Our algorithms project Philon for 36.15 tackles and 1.25 sacks this year. According to numberFire's metrics, the Chargers defense ranked 25th in the league last season in regards to total points prevented below expectation.
