49ers release Tim Hightower
The San Francisco 49ers released running back Tim Hightower.
Initially in the running for second-string duties behind Carlos Hyde, Hightower had a brutal summer (20 yards on 11 carries). Hightower put up decent performances the past two years in New Orleans, but the rebuilding 49ers are understandably seeking more upside than the 31-year-old. With Joe Williams (ankle, I.R.) inactive for the season, Matt Breida has won backup duties in the Bay Area.
Among the 42 running backs to top 100 carries in 2016, Hightower's 0.03 Rushing Net Expected Points per attempt was 14th-best.
