3 NHL FanDuel Studs to Target on 2/3/20

Tyler Seguin has been underperforming this season, but could get back on track tonight. Who else can we look to spend our salary on?

Spending up in any daily fantasy lineup is how to get the superstars and the highest upside players in your lineup. In NHL DFS, it’s different than paying up in sports like NBA or NFL. Someone can be one of the highest-priced players at his position and put up a total dud of a performance, and paying that much for him would be a huge mistake. Let’s make sure we are paying up in the right spots when building our lineups tonight.

A small three-game slate kicks off the week of NHL action. Let's see what stars we can look to roster for this Monday night.

Auston Matthews, Center, Toronto Maple Leafs

FanDuel Salary: $8,600

Auston Matthews is now up to third in the NHL in goals with 36 and is one of the hottest goal scorers in the league. He has 9 goals in the last 10 games. Matthews is one of the more consistent volume shooters in the league, as he has 53 shots on goal in that 10-game stretch. He is also is in the top ten in the league in shot attempt rate, according to Natural Stat Trick. On Monday, he has a great opportunity to continue his recent solid play.

Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs are at home against the Florida Panthers. The Panthers play a chaotic brand of hockey and have allowed the seventh-most goals per game, at 3.28. Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has been a huge disappointment in his first year with the team, with a -12.81 goals saved above average. This is a reason why the Leafs have the highest implied team total on tonight's slate, sitting at 3.6. Matthews is numberFire's highest projected skater on tonight's slate, and likely will be a popular option for everyone in all formats.

Tyler Seguin, Center, Dallas Stars

FanDuel Salary: $7,500

Tyler Seguin is probably one of the more frustrating players for fantasy players this year. He is in the top ten in the NHL in shots on goal this season, but his 11 goals are the lowest for anyone in the top 20 in shots. His 6.0 shooting percentage is the worst of his career and well below his 10.8 career average. Seguin should see positive regression over the rest of the season, so it's time to jump on board before everyone else does. Tonight should be a great place to start on the Tyler Seguin revenge tour.

The Dallas Stars will face the New York Rangers on Monday, and they couldn't ask for a better matchup. The Rangers allow the most shot attempts against per 60 minutes and the most expected goals against per 60 minutes. Dallas ranks sixth in expected goal rate, so they should feast in this spot tonight. Seguin makes for a great play in tournaments, with players likely looking at other options who have been more consistent over the season. We can take advantage of that and roster a player who is still talented and can easily get back on track, starting tonight.

Jonathan Huberdeau, Wing, Florida Panthers

FanDuel Salary: $7,200

Ranking fourth in the NHL in assists is Jonathan Huberdeau, which is probably somewhat surprising to most fans. Huberdeau quietly had 92 points last season and is on pace for over 100 this season. His points per 60 minutes is 4.15, higher than the likes of Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. He might go under the radar playing for Florida, but in most markets, Huberdeau would be considered a superstar in the league.

The Florida Panthers might be underdogs when they face Toronto tonight, but that doesn't mean that they won't be able to score some goals. They have a respectable team total of 2.9 tonight, but that's well below their season average of 3.6 goals per game. They are also facing the team who is the eighth-worst in goals allowed per game. Aleksander Barkov will be missing this game, but the Panthers still have a lot of talent up front to be able to score against a below-average Leafs defense. Huberdeau is a great option in what should be a high-scoring, back and forth game in Florida tonight.
