New Jersey Devils vs Vancouver Canucks

Under 6.5 Goals (-132) 3-Star Rating Out of 5

The New Jersey Devils head out west to face the Vancouver Canucks. Neither of these teams is likely to make the playoffs, although Vancouver is still in striking distance. There are a few reasons to like the under here tonight.

These teams don't stand out as offensive powerhouses. New Jersey is 17th in goals per game while Vancouver is 22nd. By expected goals, the Devils are 16th, and Vancouver is 18th. These teams don't profile as squads that would normally have a 6.5-goal total in a game between them.

These teams faced off slightly more than two weeks ago, and the score was 7-2 Devils. There are a few reasons why that feels like an outlier.

The Canucks were on the second game of a back-to-back and were playing backup goaltender Jaroslav Halak. Halak has not been good this season, allowing 6.65 goals above expected. Thatcher Demko should be in net today, and that is a big upgrade. For the Devils, Nico Daws has been solid in net and is the only one of the six goalies they used this season to have saved more goals than expected.

Since that game on February 28th, the Devils are averaging 2.67 goals per game. They had a hot offensive streak that has seemed to cool off in recent games. With the Canucks allowing the fifth-fewest goals per game since Bruce Boudreau took over, they should be able to hold the fort against the Devils.

Our model likes this under and gives it three stars. These wouldn't be the two teams that you would think have one of the higher totals on tonight's large slate, so the under certainly makes sense.

Other bets to consider: Arizona Coyotes +1.5 (-176), Dallas Stars-Toronto Maple Leafs Under 6.5 (-108), Nashville Predators Moneyline (-110).
