Alex Petrovic nets game-winning goal for Panthers

Florida Panthers defenseman Alex Petrovic scored a rare goal Wednesday night, and it ended up giving the Panthers an important victory in their first-round playoff series against the New York Islanders.

What It Means:

He has scored two goals in 112 regular-season games during parts of four NHL years, but he broke a 1-1 tie early in the third to give the Panthers a 2-1 victory. The Panthers and Isles now are tied 2-2 in the best-of-seven, first-round series. Teddy Purcell scored the Panthers' first goal on a power play at 15:19 of the first period. It was Purcell's second goal of the series. Drawing an assist on Purcell's goal was Jaromir Jagr, marking the 200th postseason point of his illustrious career.

The 24-year-old Petrovic had not scored a goal prior to this year, when he totaled two goals and 15 assists. His 48.7 Corsi For Percentage and -0.6 Relative Corsi For Percentage at Even Strength were both career-best clips.
