Tom Wilson signs a two-year, $4 million contract with the Capitals

Winger Tom Wilson has inked a two-year, $4 million contract with the Washington Capitals.

What It Means:

Wilson is mostly known as an enforcer, but he had his most productive season of his career last year. The Caps are hoping he's able to keep up that production next season. He had 23 points (7 goals, 16 assists), and 163 penalty minutes -- which were the third most in the NHL -- in 82 games last season. His 12:55 average minutes of ice time per game was also a career high and almost two full minute increase from his 2014-'15 average. Wilson will likely never grow into a top-line player, but he's just 22 years-old, is valued highly by the Caps and has shown flashes of growth, so while his cap hit might seem high for what he provides, this deal does not come as a shock.

Despite the increase in production, Wilson's ability to drive possession dropped this season. His Corsi For Percentage was a poor 46.3, and his Relative Corsi For Percentage at Even Strength was an awful -5.8. There is certainly room for improvement in his game.
