Luke Gregerson

Cardinals not in any rush to name closer

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said he doesn't feel the need to name a closer by the end of camp.

What It Means:

“I don’t think we need to leave here with a closer, Matheny said. "I don’t think we need to leave here with that title." He added that the Cardinals may use "a lot of different looks" to start the year but that the expectation is someone will eventually emerge as the preferred option. Luke Gregerson, who is currently sidelined with a sore oblique, has been considered the favorite to handle ninth-inning duties for St. Louis. Dominic Leone is probably next in line, followed by Bud Norris (hamstring) and Tyler Lyons.

Assuming he earns the closing gig, numberFire's models project Gregerson to record a 3.22 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 25.8 strikeout percentage with 25 saves across 64 1/3 innings this season.
