Mariners' David Phelps tears UCL, will undergo Tommy John surgery
Seattle Mariners pitcher David Phelps was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow and will require season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Phelps apparently suffered the injury on his last pitch during Saturday's Cactus League matchup with the Los Angeles Angels. The 31-year-old right-hander was expected to be a significant part of the Mariners bullpen this season, so they may look elsewhere to help fill the void.
Phelps recorded a 3.40 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP and 26.1 strikeout percentage across 55 2/3 combined innings for the Mariners and Miami Marlins in 2017.
