Chase Claypool expected to play for Steelers out wide
Pittsburgh Steelers second-round rookie wide receiver Chase Claypool is expected to play primarily out wide, per offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner.
There was some belief that Claypool would be typecast as a tight end due to his massive size (6'4", 238 pounds), but he also boasts 4.42 speed and a 40.5-inch vertical. "It's really exciting for a quarterback because you've got this catch radius and these ball placements that don't always have to be perfect," Fichtner said. "They try and make plays on balls, and just that size alone and the competitiveness, I think it's going to be an advantage to [Claypool], as well as us." Claypool should compete for the third receiving role on offense as a rookie.
Claypool hauled in 66 catches for 1,037 yards (15.7 per catch) and 13 touchdowns in his breakout senior season at Notre Dame, with 16 catches coming 20-plus yards downfield. He graduated with 27 broken tackles on 151 career catches, per Pro Football Focus.
