Colts see Marlon Mack, Jonathan Taylor as '1-1 punch'

Indianapolis Colts running backs Marlon Mack and second-rounder Jonathan Taylor offer a "1-1 punch," according to offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni.

What It Means:

This comes a little over a week after Colts head coach Frank Reich said he envisions Taylor and Mack serving as a "one-two punch." It doesn't bode well for Mack, who already saw his usage take a hit over the second half of last season. After averaging 21.6 opportunities across the first seven games, Mack averaged 16.1 opportunities over his last seven and played fewer than half of the offensive snaps in six straight to close the season. He still finished with the ninth-most rush attempts (247) in the league, but there's multiple indications that the Colts intend to hand over lead back status to the rookie in Mack's contract year. Nyheim Hines is also expected to remain involved as a pass-catcher, further limiting Mack's workload. On the flip side, the Colts executed the fifth-most rushing plays in the NFL last season (471), so Mack should still maintain a role even if Taylor moves to the top of the depth chart. The 2017 fourth-rounder turned 24 in March.

Mack averaged 12.5 FanDuel points (RB20) and 83.8 offensive yards per game with 8 touchdowns. He rushed for over 1,000 yards for the first time, finishing 10th with 77.9 rushing yards per game. Mack ranked 6th in numberFire's advanced rushing metric out of 20 running backs with at least 200 carries.
