Vosburgh Stakes Odds

The field for the 2022 Vosburgh Stakes was drawn on Wednesday, October 5, with morning lines assigned the next day. The morning line should provide a good preliminary clue for who should take money. However, in such a small field, playing the board can be important since it can provide some clues on who astute bettors think the morning line writer may have sold short.

Vosburgh Stakes Prep Results

Only one of the entrants comes out of a graded stakes in his most recent start. Drafted, making his first start in two and a half months, most recently finished fifth behind Cody’s Wish in the Forego (G1). However, he was more competitive in lower-level stakes through the spring and summer, including a victory in the Runhappy (G3) at Aqueduct in May.

Jalen Journey most recently ran third in the Liberty Bell Stakes, beaten eight and a half lengths by Fortheluvofbourbon, who has now won five straight starts. That race just happened on October 3, though trainer Norman Cash has not been shy to wheel horses back quickly, even stakes horses. Rail-drawn Southern District, for Chad Brown, was most recently a well-beaten fourth as the favorite in the restricted Tale of the Cat Stakes on August 10 at the Spa. Before that, he had won two straight races in allowance company.

Morning line favorite Elite Power, winner of three straight starts this summer, makes his stakes debut in the Forego. He most recently won a six-furlong second-level allowance at Saratoga, though his maiden win came over a seven-furlong trip. Eastern Bay comes into this race off of a victory in a non-conditioned allowance at Parx, though two back he finished second in the Russell Road Stakes on the Charles Town Classic undercard.

Vosburgh Stakes Contenders

Southern District: One of the two four-year-old newer faces in this race, he disappointed in his stakes debut August 10 at Saratoga. But, it is a positive sign that, even after this disappointment, trainer Chad Brown keeps him pointed for a graded outing. His biggest challenge is pace; he does not have a lot of early speed, but neither does anyone in this field. But, he has been able to finish into pedestrian fractions before.

Jalen Journey: This 7-year-old has been bouncing between stakes and allowance company for years, and with 10 wins in 25 starts he has been a hardworking sort. His seven-furlong record is strong, with three wins in four starts. He also has tactical speed, something that could help him carve out a trip in this short field. The biggest question is whether he is good enough; his career best is, but he hasn’t been anywhere near that in his last three starts.

Eastern Bay: This hickory eight-year-old has won 18 times in 50 starts, though most of those outings have come in allowances and minor stakes; in fact, he has only tried the graded ranks once. It was a good outing, though, a second-place finish in the 2020 DeFrancis Dash (G3). A midpack type, his recent form is consistent enough to make him likely for an underneath slot, though a winning effort may be just beyond what he can muster.

Elite Power: This morning line favorite tries stakes company for the first time, but he is in the right form to do it. It took him four tries to get off the mark, but he has won his last three starts emphatically, making this a logical time to step him up in class. His relative inexperience is a question, but he is fast enough, he has been able to win at two different tracks so far, and he has won his only try at seven furlongs.

Drafted: Unlike the rest of the field, he takes a sharp drop in class for the Vosburgh. His record is hit-or-miss both at Aqueduct and at this seven-furlong trip; he may be better going the more traditional six-furlong sprint trip. He did win the Toboggan (G3) at seven furlongs at Aqueduct back in February, though that was over a sloppy track and he have never run a race quite that good over fast footing.

Vosburgh Stakes Past Winners Past Performances

All of the last ten Vosburgh winners came in from stakes races. Nine of the last ten raced in graded company, with the sole exception being Private Zone, who won the ungraded Pirate’s Bounty at Del Mar before winning in 2013, the first of his two triumphs in the Vosburgh. He won his second after a fourth-place effort in the Turf Monster (G3) at Parx, making him the only recent Vosburgh winner to have prepared on grass.

The Vanderbilt (G1) has provided the most winners in the last ten years with three: Rock Fall (2015) won it in his last start before the Vosburgh, and Imperial Hint (2018, 2019) did so both times he won the Vosburgh. The Forego has only been the last-out race for one winner in the last ten years: Firenze Fire (2020) finished 11th in that race before righting the ship in the Vosburgh. The True North (G2) has also produced a recent winner; Joking (2016) won it in his first start since winning that Belmont race.

Though this is not an issue in 2022, with no sophomores entered in the race, three Vosburgh winners in the last 10 years have come into the race off of losing efforts in graded stakes against their own age group. The Lumber Guy (2012) came in from a sixth-place outing in the Peter Pan (G3); Takaful (2017) and Following Sea (2021) were second and third, respectively, in the H. Allen Jerkens (G1).

Vosburgh Stakes Undercard

The Vosburgh Stakes will be run as the fifth of 11 races on Saturday, October 8 at Aqueduct. It is one of three graded events on the card. Aqueduct Race Track

Aqueduct, affectionately known as The Big A, opened up in 1894 under the auspices of the Queens County Jockey Club in Queens, New York. It is the only racetrack within New York City limits. The original track was demolished in 1956, though the new one reopened in 1959 and has successfully hosted racing ever since. In 1975 the inner track was laid in order for the venue to host winter racing, now a fixture at the track.

Though winter racing originally took place over the inner track, the outer dirt track was winterized in 2017, and now winter racing happens on the main dirt. The main track is a nine-furlong dirt oval with a one-mile chute. It surrounds two turf courses. The outer turf is a one-mile course. The inner grass course, which took the place of the inner dirt in 2017, covers seven furlongs.
