Fantasy Baseball: 7 Hitters You Should Buy Low

Matt Carpenter, 1B/3B, St. Louis Cardinals

Matt Carpenter has generally been one of the most underrated players in fantasy, and right now might be the ideal time to snag the St. Louis Cardinals infielder.

In 71 plate appearances, the former All-Star has a batting average of .185, thanks to a BABIP of .242 (which has actually gone up in recent days). He has just two homers so far on the season, after hitting 23 last year and 21 the season before, but his on-base percentage of .352 and his walk rate of 21.1% indicates that his batting average is going to come up with time.

Only six players in baseball have a higher walk rate than Carpenter, which is a really good sign. He'll need to get a little luckier on grounders, as his ground-ball rate of 35.3% is considerably higher than last year's 26.9%, and his fly ball rate is way down, from 50.8% in 2017 to 38.2% in 2018. However, he continues to hit line drives at the same pace (26.5%), which would suggest that more of his balls in play should find the outfield green a bit more often as the season progresses.

If your owner is down on Carpenter's lack of dingers and low average, now's the time to jump and add him to your squad.
