3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Players to Avoid on 4/27/18
Rhys Hoskins, OF, Philadelphia Phillies
FanDuel Price: $4,800
Rhys Hoskins has been on a tear to start the season, and Julio Teheran is a pitcher we often target for opposing hitters in DFS. What gives in a matchup between the two?
For one, Hoskins' high-level of production could be in for some regression unless he cuts his strikeout rate (24.2%). When he isn't striking out, he hits the ball hard (37.3% hard-hit rate) at a high clip, but a .432 batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is an unsustainable mark for any hitter. And, even though a 167 career wRC+ against right-handed pitching is outstanding, a closer inspection shows he does exhibit significant platoon splits.
Against left-handed pitching, Hoskins has a career 30.0% walk rate and 18.8% strikeout rate. Those numbers are 15.0% and 24.2% against right-handed pitching, respectively. His fly-ball rate also drops from 56.4% to 44.4% against right-handers compared to left-handers, and his hard-hit rate against lefties -- 48.7% -- drops to 42.2% against right-handed pitching. Obviously, these are still above-average numbers, but we should lean toward using Hoskins against southpaws.
Moreover, Teheran has been better of late following a shaky start to the season. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer and struck out at least six in each of his last three starts. He's also traditionally tough on right-handed batters, holding them to a .269 wOBA and striking them out at a 24.5% clip for his career.
