What a month it was for Los Angeles Angels starter Tyler Skaggs. Out of 90 qualified starting pitchers, Skaggs had the lowest ERA of anyone in June (0.84), the only starter in baseball with a month-long ERA under 1.00.
He started five games, pitched 32.0 innings, struck out 29.0% of hitters and allowed opponents to hit a meager .233 against him. It's a continuation of a terrific bounceback season for the left-hander, who has a 2.64 ERA, 3.03 FIP and 3.34 xFIP in 16 starts (92.0 innings). He's been injury-riddled in recent seasons, already matching last year's starts total after making just 10 starts in 2016 and missing all of 2015 with Tommy John surgery.
The numbers show he hasn't been getting lucky. He's allowing a .320 BABIP that is higher than league average (.291). He's also owning left-handers to the tune of .171/.194/.293 slash line this season, and his numbers with runners in scoring position -- .224/.325/.394 -- are great.
Skaggs won't continue to be this good, but he's always had talent, is striking out guys, and should continue to be a solid fantasy contributor this season.
