Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Monday 8/29/22

Stacks are an integral part of daily fantasy baseball. They can push a team to the top of a GPP by driving upside. However, they're also viable in cash games, namely smaller (two-person or three-person) stacks that mitigate the volatility of a full four-person stack.

This article is your home throughout the 2022 Major League Baseball season for the day's top stacks. The primary goal is to identify the highest-scoring upside stack. Still, game theory will play a role in contrarian stacks making the cut as GPP options. Nevertheless, chalky stacks will make appearances in this space, too.

Beyond my analysis in this space, I strongly suggest numberFire premium members using our DFS Sharpstack tool and hitting heat map tool. The DFS Sharpstack helps plug stacks into optimized lineups, allowing you to change parameters and lock or exclude players and teams. Meanwhile, the heat map offers a one-stop-shop for the opposing starting pitcher, implied total, park factor, and other notable goodies.

Now, let's look at the top stacks on today's main slate.

Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers should have a tasty matchup on the docket tonight. Roster Resource is projecting Jerad Eickhoff to start for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Eickhoff doesn't belong in a big-league rotation at this point in his career.

According to FanGraphs, in 92 innings in Triple-A this season, Eickhoff has a mediocre 4.30 ERA, 4.26 xFIP, and allowed 1.37 homers per nine innings. In addition, Eickhoff had a 7.21 ERA, 5.59 xFIP, and allowed 3.17 homers per nine innings in his most recent 82 and 1/3 innings in the majors -- which goes all the way back to 2019.

As if Eickhoff's struggles aren't a good enough reason for stacking the Brewers, Pittsburgh's pitiful bullpen adds to the appeal. Pittsburgh's relievers have the fifth-highest ERA (4.53) in 2022.

Everything comes up roses for the Brewers tonight.

My favorite option is slugger Rowdy Tellez ($2,800). In 224 plate appearances against righties in Milwaukee for the Brewers since they acquired him last year, he's hit 15 homers with a .297 ISO and 132 wRC+.

Willy Adames ($3,600) is another nifty option. He's had 20 homers and a .278 ISO in 279 plate appearances against righties in Milwaukee since they traded for him. Others, such as Christian Yelich ($3,200), Hunter Renfroe ($3,400), and Kolten Wong ($2,700) are stellar choices to round out this stack.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies should tee off on a struggling southpaw tonight. Madison Bumgarner owns a 5.87 ERA and 4.83 xFIP in his previous nine starts (53 and 2/3 innings). He's also coughed up at least four runs in each of his previous five starts and six of his last seven.

The southpaw has been dreadful against righties. Bumgarner has yielded a .498 slugging and .362 wOBA to 449 right-handed batters this year. Additionally, the Arizona Diamondbacks' relievers have been a disaster this season. Arizona's bullpen has the sixth-highest ERA (4.35).

As a result, the Phillies are a great offense to stack. My favorite options are Rhys Hoskins ($3,400) and Nick Castellanos ($3,100). Since 2019, Hoskins has a .419 OBP, .305 ISO, and 164 wRC+ against lefties. Meanwhile, Castellanos has a .359 OBP, .240 ISO, and 137 wRC+ in the split.

Alec Bohm ($3,200) is another excellent pick. He's generated a .372 OBP and 137 wRC+ against lefties in his young career. The Phillies -- whose 5.08 implied total is the slate's second-best clip (as of early Monday) -- are stackable from top to bottom because of Bumgarner's struggles and the ineptitude of Arizona's bullpen.
