Cubs' Jose Quintana underwent thumb surgery
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jose Quintana underwent surgery on his left thumb after injuring it while washing dishes at home.
Quintana needed five stitches after suffering a laceration on his left thumb. He's expected to resume throwing in two weeks and be re-evaluated at that time. The 31-year-old left-hander will most likely open the season on the injured list. Tyler Chatwood and Alec Mills will likely fill out the last two spots in the Cubs' rotation to open the season.
numberFire's models expect Quintana to record a 4.42 ERA and 1.34 WHIP this season. He turned in a career-worst 4.68 ERA last season, finishing with a 4.00-plus ERA for the third consecutive year. Over the first five years of his career, Quintana never had an ERA above 3.76.
