Panthers prefer Christian McCaffrey to play less
Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey shouldn't be on the field every play, according to new head coach Matt Rhule.
Former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said the same thing last offseason, but McCaffrey has led all running backs in snaps played by a significant margin each of the past two years. Only entering his age-24 campaign, McCaffrey has never missed a game through three seasons while averaging a healthy 5.9 yards per touch on monstrous workloads. Last season, McCaffrey became only the third player in NFL history to accumulate 1,000 rushing and receiving yards in the same season. His 2,392 yards from scrimmage was the third-most all-time in a single season and his 116 receptions broke his own running back record.
McCaffrey averaged 25.8 FanDuel points, finishing only behind Lamar Jackson (28.2), and 149.5 yards from scrimmage with 19 touchdowns last season. He led all running backs with 91.0 Net Expected Points, finishing with over 24.0 more NEP than any other back.
