Saints sign ex-Buccaneer quarterback Jameis Winston to one-year deal
The New Orleans Saints have signed quarterback Jameis Winston to a one-year deal.
The Saints acted quickly after the draft, signing Winston first thing in the morning. Winston gives the Saints a strong backup option behind Brees as the team prepares to make yet another deep run into the playoffs in the 2020 season. While gadget quarterback Taysom Hill did receive a first-round tender this offseason, he is an unrealistic option to replace Brees when the latter eventually retires.
Winston's deal is of the prove-it variety, similar to how we saw the Saints handle Teddy Bridgewater when he was with the team. Hopefully the turnover-prone Winston can learn from Brees, who has thrown fewer interceptions over the past three seasons (17) than Winston threw in 2019 alone (30). While this landing spot may not be the best for Winston in the 2020 season, it could end up being the best possible situation for the 26-year-old's career.
