49ers' Trey Sermon (concussion) 'trending in good direction'
San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Trey Sermon (concussion) was limited in Wednesday's practice.
Sermon is wearing a non-contact jersey as he remains in the concussion protocol, but 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said the third-round pick is "trending in a good direction." Sermon was inactive for Week 1 and then suffered a concussion on his only snap in Week 2. Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) did not practice on Wednesday and Shanahan has already indicated that Ja'Mycal Hasty (ankle) will not play in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers, seemingly leaving Sermon as the healthiest of the three. Trenton Cannon is currently the only other running back on the active roster. Kerryon Johnson, Chris Thompson and Jacques Patrick are on the practice squad and could be called up.
The 49ers have earned the second-best team grade for run blocking this season from Pro Football Focus. The Packers run defense is No. 22 in numberFire's advanced team rankings and No. 18 in terms of FanDuel points allowed per game to the running back position.
