Caserio: Texans' John Metchie III a 'full' participant in early offseason program
Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio told reporters that wide receiver John Metchie III (leukemia) has been a full participant in the team's offseason program thus far.
This is fantastic news, as Metchie missed his rookie season while undergoing treatments for leukemia. The former Alabama wideout has been trending in the right direction, and as of this writing it seems as though he will be ready for Week 1 of the 2023 season. The Texans added wideout Tank Dell in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft and acquired veteran wideout Robert Woods in the offseason, but Metchie should be able to make an impact right away for new teammate C.J. Stroud.
Metchie led the 2021 Crimson Tide in receptions with 96 despite playing alongside Jameson Williams, and finished that season with 1,142 yards and 8 scores. Unless Houston adds another pass-catcher this offseason, Metchie has a realistic path to leading the team in receiving in 2023.
