Lions' David Montgomery (quad) needs 'a couple weeks'
Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery said it would take “a couple weeks” for his quadriceps injury to heal after Sunday's 37-31 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Montgomery was carted to the locker room at the start of the fourth quarter after he appeared to suffer the injury in the third. First-round rookie Jahmyr Gibbs and Craig Reynolds will take on more backfield work if Montgomery is unavailable for Week 3 against the Atlanta Falcons. Gibbs and Reynolds should handle most of the workload, but the Lions may call up Zonovan Knight from the practice squad to steal some snaps away.
Montgomery rushed 16 times for 67 yards and a touchdown in Week 2, and he caught a pass for 7 yards, totaling 11.9 FanDuel points on 30 snaps (45%). After Montgomery exited in the third quarter, Gibbs and Reynolds each had 3 carries, but Gibbs out-targeted Reynolds 5-1. The Lions have expressed their desire to limit Gibbs' workload, so Reynolds could play a significant role on early downs.
