Leonard Fournette joins Bills practice squad Monday

Free agent running back Leonard Fournette is signing with the Buffalo Bills practice squad.

What It Means:

If things go well for Fournette at practice this week, he could be added to the Bills' active roster for Week 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday night. The veteran back turned 28 in January and was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in February, but Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported earlier this month that Fournette is "in great shape" and ready to contribute for a contender. Fournette will likely compete with Latavius Murray for touches in a complementary role behind James Cook. The Bills may intend to use Fournette primarily as a pass-catcher after he drew over 80 targets each of the last two seasons.

Fournette rushed 189 times for 668 yards and 3 touchdowns in 16 games for the Bucs last season, and he caught 73 passes on 83 targets for 523 yards and another 3 touchdowns. The volume was there, but Fournette's 3.5 yards per carry was the second-worst of his career and his only 100-yard game came in Week 1.
