Rams' Matthew Stafford (thumb) 'unlikely' to play in Week 9

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford (thumb) is "unlikely" to play in the team's Week 9 game against the Green Bay Packers.

What It Means:

It sounds like the Rams are still trying to give Stafford every chance he can get to suit up and that the team won't make an official call until closer to game time, but for now it looks like the team is preparing to start Brett Rypien under center. Rypien would be a significant downgrade for Los Angeles and would negatively affect the fantasy outputs of players like Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. We will hopefully get Stafford back on the field before too long.

Rypien, who has a $6,300 salary on FanDuel, has appeared in 9 games and has made 3 starts in his NFL career, resulting in 4 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and 5 fumbles. Rams head coach Sean McVay has coaxed strong performances out of subpar quarterbacks in the past, but it's hard to see Rypien keeping the fantasy values of both Kupp and Nacua afloat against the Packers this weekend.
