Panthers take Christian McCaffrey with eighth pick
The Carolina Panthers selected Stanford Cardinal running back Christian McCaffrey with the eighth overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft.
McCaffrey is coming off a somewhat disappointing 2016 season after being a top-three finalist for the 2015 Heisman Trophy. With his speed and pass protection skills, the running back will be able to contribute right away for Carolina despite Jonathan Stewart likely remaining the starting back in 2017. Expect the duo to split carries with McCaffrey being a significant upgrade over Stewart in the passing game.
McCaffrey totaled 3,622 rushing yards with 21 touchdowns on 590 carries the last two seasons. He also added 82 receptions for 955 yards and 8 touchdowns over the last 25 games.
