3 FanDuel NHL Studs to Target on 10/23/19

Steven Stamkos and the Lightning look to strike against the Penguins. Who else should we roster tonight?

Spending up in any Daily Fantasy lineup is how to get the superstars and the highest upside players in your lineup. In NHL DFS, it’s different than paying up in sports like NBA or NFL. Someone can be one of the highest-priced players at his position a put up a total dud of a performance, and paying that much for him would be a huge mistake. Let’s make sure we are paying up in the right spots when building our lineups tonight.

There's only two games in the NHL tonight, but there are still some big stars playing tonight. Who should we target on this small slate?

Sidney Crosby, Center, Pittsburgh Penguins

FanDuel Price: $9,000

Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins face the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have surprisingly not been very strong defensively to start the season. According to Natural Stat Trick, Tampa has allowed the sixth-most shot attempts per game at five on five play. Even if he is matched up against the Lightning's top line, he should be able to get some chances as all three members of that line are allowing over sixty shot attempts per 60 minutes.

The Penguins have been forced to ride Crosby even harder than usual with Evgeni Malkin missing time. Crosby has been playing over 21 minutes a night as a result, and has been putting up points to go with it. He ranks eighth in the league with 13 points this year.

Steven Stamkos, Wing, Tampa Bay Lightning

FanDuel Price: $8,700

On the opposite side of that game for the Penguins is Steven Stamkos' Lightning. Stamkos is Tampa's leader in goals and points this season. The Penguins are coming off a loss on Tuesday night against the Florida Panthers, and have to go to Tampa for a road back to back. makes the Lightning a significant favorite in this game, at -210. They also have an implied goal total of 3.75, the highest for the four teams on this slate.

Stamkos is the main trigger man on the Lightning's efficient power play, with a whopping 33.12 shot attempts per 60 minutes with the man advantage last season. He will have the chance to shoot on the Penguins' backup goalie Tristan Jarry, which could lead to a goal or two on Wednesday night.

Thomas Chabot, Defenseman, Ottawa Senators

FanDuel Price: $5,300

This might be the only time all season that this article features a player from the Ottawa Senators. The only player on the team that could be in the article is Thomas Chabot, the team's star defenseman. Chabot is second in the league in time on ice per game, just two seconds behind the leader Brent Burns. Being on the ice has given Chabot a good shooting floor, with over four shots on goal in five of eight games this season. Ottawa is a favorite for possibly the first time this season as they take on the Detroit Red Wings at home who just played last night.

The Senators actually have the second-highest implied total on the slate, so playing the defenseman who never leaves the ice for them makes sense. Chabot's $5,300 price tag is a good value as he is cheaper than Kevin Shattenkirk, who's price is inflated due to good shooting luck and doesn't have time on Tampa Bay's top power-play unit. If you want the chance to roster Chabot comfortably, this may be one of the best chances you get to do so this season.
