3 Daily Fantasy NHL Stacks for Monday 2/28/22

In daily fantasy hockey, stacking is a key strategy in tournaments. We want to correlate our lineups with up to four players to maximize our upside, as if one player on a line is scoring goals, it's likely that his linemates are getting assists as well. Ideally, we'll want players that will get a lot of ice time together on an even strength line and a power play line. Two good resources for line combinations are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceoff.com, so be sure to check those sites for updated line information.

Three games are on tap to start the week, so let's look at the best stacks of the night.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs played one of the craziest games of the season on Saturday. They led 7-2 after the second period, and then a wild third period saw the game finish 10-7. What really matters for DFS purposes is that the top line went nuts.

The star of the show was Mitchell Marner ($8,700). He went off for four goals and two assists, good for 73.6 FanDuel points. Auston Matthews ($10,300) now has nine points in his last three games after having four points on Saturday. Last but not least is Michael Bunting ($6,200), who had a goal and four assists in that insane game. These guys produced the stuff you dream about when stacking a line, as all three players were needed to win tournaments on Saturday.

The Leafs will get a matchup with the Washington Capitals tonight. The Capitals have been in a funk and are 5-5-0 in their last 10 games. There are a lot of question marks over their goaltending, as Ilya Samsonov has saved -3.04 goals above expected this season.

Toronto has the highest implied team total on tonight's slate. They've shown that they are capable of breaking a slate multiple times, and with just three games tonight, that's definitely the case again.

Washington Capitals

We can certainly target the Capitals on the other side of that game, too. It clearly has the best game environment, and the Capitals have some star players who can exploit Toronto if their goaltending plays as poorly as it has of late.

We've seen Alex Ovechkin ($9,800) cool off from his hot start. He has just five points in his last 10 games. He still has 39 shots over those 10 games, so that slump should correct itself if he keeps getting the shot volume. He's playing with second-leading scorer Evgeny Kuznetsov ($7,500) at five-on-five and on the power play. Tom Wilson ($5,400) is also on this line and can chip in offensively.

The second line is intriguing from a value perspective. Nicklas Backstrom ($5,700) and T.J. Oshie ($5,700) will link up on the top power play. Add in Conor Sheary ($4,400) and you have a pretty nice three-man stack that doesn't use too much salary.

Washington will face Leafs goalie Petr Mrazek tonight. Mrazek has not been good all season, allowing 4.51 goals above expected in just 12 appearances. This poor goaltending could see Ovechkin break out of his shooting slump.

The Capitals will certainly be less popular than the Leafs, so they are a good contrarian way to attack the best game of the night.

Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins haven't been a complete juggernaut this season. They are only in a wild card spot in probably the toughest division. They've won four in a row and have some interesting numbers that make them appealing in any matchup.

The Bruins have been driven by Patrice Bergeron ($6,800) for several years. Remarkably, he's been driving play this season better than anyone since this data became available in 2007-08. It hasn't always led to personal fantasy success, but it has helped his linemates. Brad Marchand ($9,000) plays on his wing and leads the team in points despite missing 11 games this season. The new addition to this line has been Jake DeBrusk ($5,300), who now has four goals in his last four games.

The second line can also be played. It includes Taylor Hall ($5,800) and David Pastrnak ($8,600), who link up on the top power play. Erik Haula ($4,300) will play center and offers nice salary relief to fit in other pieces.

This isn't an easy matchup for Boston against the Los Angeles Kings. Both teams are similar in that they are strong defensively, but the Bruins are better in most metrics. These lines likely won't be very popular, as the Bruins have the second-lowest implied team total on the slate. They still have enough upside to be in winning lineups on this small slate, though.
