3 Daily Fantasy NHL Stacks for Wednesday 4/20/22
In daily fantasy hockey, stacking is a key strategy in tournaments. We want to correlate our lineups with up to four players to maximize our upside -- if one player on a line is scoring goals, it's likely that his linemates are getting assists, as well.
Ideally, we want players who will get a lot of ice time together on an even-strength line and a power-play line. Two good resources for line combinations are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceoff.com, so be sure to check those sites for updated line information.
There are just four games in the NHL tonight, but let's break down the best stacks for the night.
Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche have been one of the best teams to stack for about the last four seasons. They produce performances that most other teams just aren't capable of doing. They should have the highest ceiling of any team tonight given their matchup.
The Avs went back to lines they had used in the past with their current set of injuries to their forward group. Nathan MacKinnon ($10,000) and Mikko Rantanen ($8,000) have been joined by analytics darling Valeri Nichushkin ($6,800).
MacKinnon has nine goals in his past 10 games and is seemingly over the injury that caused him to miss a game a few weeks ago. Rantanen has 13 points in his last 10 games and leads the team with 91 points. Nichushkin has averaged a point per game in his last 10 and has been joining the top power play unit, as well.
Colorado is traveling to face the Seattle Kraken tonight. The Kraken have been poor for much of the season and face an uphill battle against the best team in the league. Colorado has played Seattle twice this season and scored 11 goals in those two games.
The Avalanche have an implied team total above four goals tonight and could go off in this matchup.
Chicago Blackhawks
The Chicago Blackhawks have had a disaster of a season on and off the ice. But they have some players who have risen above their team's poor play to become very relevant in fantasy. Tonight, they have a great spot to keep doing just that.
Chicago's offense has been driven by one main line since this trio was put together. Patrick Kane ($8,700) has matched his jersey number with 88 points this season. He's been a great setup man for Alex DeBrincat ($7,700), whose 39 goals are tied for the ninth-most in the league. Dylan Strome ($5,600) has been rejuvenated in the second half of the season after being a healthy scratch early in the year.
This line had great chemistry in the 2018-19 season that saw career highs in points for all three. They will also link up on the top power play together.
Chicago will face the only team below them in the Central Division, the Arizona Coyotes. We know the drill with teams playing against Arizona -- you want to get some exposure to them. The Coyotes have now lost seven games in a row and allowed a stunning 6.14 goals per game in that stretch. They have been one of the worst teams in the salary cap era.
Chicago's top line produces most of their goals, and they overcome the team's overall underlying metrics not being too strong. Chicago's team total is 3.56 goals, but in this game, it wouldn't be too surprising if they scored five or six.
Dallas Stars
We've talked about the two teams that are the most obvious stacks of the night, so let's go with one a bit under the radar.
The Dallas Stars have the second-lowest implied team total of the night, but they do have a few things going for them that make them intriguing.
When stacking Dallas, you have to look at the first line, which has been one of the best in the NHL this season.
Roope Hintz ($7,200) picked up two goals in a losing effort on Monday night, which brought him to 34 on the season. Jason Robertson ($7,700) continues his stellar sophomore season with 36 goals. Joe Pavelski ($7,200) leads the team in points with 75 on the season, so all three players are big contributors on this line. They all play together on the top power play.
The Stars are on the road against the Edmonton Oilers tonight. The Oilers have really gotten things together and are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. However, it's tough to be fully convinced that their defense and goaltending issues are fully resolved with the same personnel they had while experiencing those issues.
The other side of this game will be more popular, but Dallas' first line gets you much cleaner correlation than Edmonton's does. If Dallas scores three goals, we could easily see all of these players getting multiple points. That may be enough to be one of the best stacks on this smaller slate.
