NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.
Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters. Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.
Let's jump in and take a look at today's slate and some players to consider for your lineups.
Goalie to Target
Antti Raanta ($7,300): The Carolina Hurricanes are the largest (-245) moneyline favorites on the slate, yet Raanta has the fourth-most expensive goalie salary. This is a spot I generally like to jump on when a player's salary doesn't match the betting markets.
It's an easy matchup for Raanta, as he is set to take on the Chicago Blackhawks, who have one of the worst offenses in the league. So far, Chicago is only scoring 1.82 goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the third-lowest in the league.
On the flip side, the Canes are scoring 2.76 goals in the same situations, which should allow their offense to flex tonight and power Raanta to a win.
High-Salaried Skaters
Martin Necas ($9,400): Necas got off to a hot start this season with six goals in his first 10 games but has cooled off a bit since then. He comes in with just a single goal over his last five games but does have 4 assists and 16 shots on goal. I will continue to buy in on players with consistent shot volume, regardless of them finding the back of the net.
This is what we have with Necas, who is averaging three shots on goal per game and now faces one of the weakest defenses in the league. The Blackhawks come in with a 64.25 Corsi Against (Total Shot Attempts Allowed) per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the third-worst in the league.
When it comes to the Hurricanes' offense, they are boasting a 70.28 Corsi For (Total Shot Attempts Created) per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations. These are two teams at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to shot creation and shot prevention, which presents massive upside for the Hurricanes' offense.
Nathan MacKinnon ($10,400): When MacKinnon gets on a hot streak as he is right now, you simply roster him every night. Over his last five games, MacKinnon has 13 NHL points and 25 shots on goals. That's 13 NHL points in five games. He's posting over two NHL points per game as well as five shots on goal per game. The combination of a high fantasy floor and a massive ceiling simply cannot be matched by any other player on this slate.
The Colorado Avalanche have a slate-high 3.74 implied goal total, and there's no doubt MacKinnon will be involved in the offense if they are going to hit or exceed that mark. He's taking on the St. Louis Blues, who are allowing the fifth-most (3.01) goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the worst of any team on tonight's slate.
Value Skaters
Andrew Mangiapane ($4,600): The Calgary Flames have a 3.31 implied goal total and could be in for a higher-scoring game against the Los Angeles Kings, where the total is set at 6.0. Both teams are in the bottom half of the league for the most goals allowed per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which should present some really nice offensive upside.
Mangiapane is no doubt off to a slow start this season with only two goals in 14 games played. It hasn't been great, but he has picked up his shot volume in the last few games -- 11 shots on goal over the last three -- and with his role on the second forward line and the second power-play unit, the chances will be there for him to start finding some goals.
Drew Doughty ($4,900): Doughty is the defender on the first defensive pairing and the first power-play for the Kings, putting him in a good spot for some points tonight. He won't carry insane offensive upside, but given the potential scoring environment versus the Flames, the point-per-dollar production is certainly there.
Doughty also fills up the stat sheet with nearly three shots on goal and blocked shots per game. The category potential is there for Doughty, and if he can pick up an assist on the power-play, he will crush value tonight.
