MLB Postseason: Ranking the Starting Rotations
2) Chicago Cubs
Starters xFIP: 3.76 (2nd)
Starters SIERA: 3.88 (3rd)
K-BB %: 15.9% (3rd)
Projected Rotation: Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, Jake Arrieta and John Lackey
This is easily the deepest rotation of any team in the postseason, and one that has a great argument for the top slot.
The Chicago Cubs are going to roll out two 2016 Cy Young candidates (Lester and Hendricks), the ERA leader (Hendricks), the 2015 Cy Young winner (Arrieta), and a fourth starter (Lackey) who recorded a respectable 3.83 SIERA over 29 starts who turns 38 this month.
While Lester and Hendricks took big strides forward in 2016, Arrieta regressed from his otherworldly 2014 and 2015 seasons, which saw him record SIERA's of 2.83 and 2.75, respectively. As we highlighted previously, Arrieta's biggest issue this year was his walk rate, which nearly doubled from 2015 (5.5%) to 2016 (9.6%). Arrieta still enjoyed a strong season, but he did not match his output from the last two campaigns.
If it weren't for a fantastic Kershaw and Hill leading the Dodgers rotation, this staff easily takes the top spot.
