Jordan Montgomery has been a pleasant surprise for the New York Yankees, and in fact, he has the second-highest swinging-strike rate (13.2%) on the slate behind Chris Sale. But with a surprisingly tough matchup against the Chicago White Sox, he lags behind Sale, Jeff Samardzija, and Carlos Carrasco tonight.
The White Sox's active roster has the highest wRC+ against southpaws in the league (135), and even if you think that's a tad lucky due to a .369 BABIP, they also don't strike out much (19.0% rate), which further makes them an undesirable opponent.
Despite Montgomery's stellar swinging-strike rate, it hasn't translated to consistently high fantasy scores, in part because he typically doesn't pitch deep into games. He's only reached seven innings once in 13 starts and has reached at least 40 fantasy points just twice. He also has a mediocre 4.32 SIERA.
Lastly, some strong winds in Chicago could make things treacherous for Yankees and White Sox pitchers tonight. The White Sox have a 4.76 implied team total.
Montgomery could have some gems down the road, but tonight doesn't look like one of them.
