Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Adds: Week 21

With the fantasy baseball season quickly reaching the end, who should you be looking for off the waiver wire?

It's crunch time baby.

Chances are, if you're still adding players to your roster, you're battling it out for your league's fantasy championship this week. And while you probably have most of your team locked in place, there are a few players who can help you lock down that title.

Here are six waiver wire candidates to be added this week, all owned at less than 50% in ESPN fantasy leagues.

Alex Gordon - Kansas City Royals (OF)

ESPN Percentage Owned: 48.5%

Over his last 76 plate appearances (going back to August 9), Alex Gordon his hitting .338/.408/.662 with 6 home runs, 10 RBIs and 17 runs scored, good for a wRC+ of 182 during that stretch. That has helped propel Kansas City back into the playoff picture in the American League, and is boosting what had been a lackluster 2016 season.

He has seven dingers in the month of August. He had seven all season coming into August. Needless to say, he's hot.

His season totals are not impressive. He's batted just .226/.323/.394 in 390 plate appearances, with just 14 homers and a wRC+ of 92. But he, like the Royals, is just hitting his stride. Pick him up and ride the wave.

Jayson Werth - Washington Nationals (OF)

ESPN Percentage Owned: 33.1%

You may not have noticed it but, at age 37, Jayson Werth is having one of his best seasons in recent memory.

Last week he had a streak of consecutive games getting on base snapped at 46, tying a franchise record. His 18 home runs are the most he's hit since 2013, and he's also added 26 doubles on top of it. And after a disappointing April and May, Werth has been even better.

Since June 7th, he's hit .275/.397/.462 for an .858 OPS, with 9 homers and 17 doubles in 290 plate appearances.

Most importantly, he's stayed healthy in 2016, with 116 games under his belt, helping the Washington Nationals run away with the National League East this season.

Joe Panik - San Francisco Giants (2B)

ESPN Percentage Owned: 39.5%

Here's what 'ol Joe did on Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.

Joe Panik hit two home runs on Sunday against the Braves and now has 8 on the season. His overall numbers for this year aren't great, batting .246/.325/.387 in 412 appearances at the plate, paltry numbers for a second baseman in a season flush with big seasons from players at that position.

The reason to grab him now is that he's been a solid fantasy performer in the past and, he's hot. Since August 10 he's batted .340/.438/.642 with three of his home runs coming during that stretch.

Kendall Graveman - Oakland Athletics (SP)

ESPN Percentage Owned: 18.0%

Earlier this month, Kendall Graveman did something only one other Major League pitcher had done this year: throw a complete game in under 100 pitches.

Even though he doesn't pile up the strikeouts (just a 5.23 strikeouts per nine), he's been effective this season, going 10-8 with a 3.97 ERA in 149 2/3 innings. And he's been better in the second half, putting up an ERA of 3.27, more than a full run better than his first half ERA of 4.37.

Again, he's not going to fill up your strikeout category, but the dude can pile up innings and provide solid production at the back end of your rotation.

Kevin Gausman - Baltimore Orioles (SP)

ESPN Percentage Owned: 33.6%

Kevin Gausman shut out the New York Yankees on Sunday, going seven innings and scattering seven hits while striking out nine, his first win on the road in two years. He had gone 0-16 in his last 25 starts away from Camden Yards.

He now has four quality starts in his last six outings, all coming in August, with a 2.45 ERA. He has struck out 10.06 batters per nine innings this month, while walking just 2.95.

This is the starter the Orioles thought they were going to get as Gausman sat atop prospects lists these last few seasons.

Carlos Rodon - Chicago White Sox (SP)

ESPN Percentage Owned: 34.7%

Like Gausman, Carlos Rodon has been on fire in the month of August, with a 1.47 ERA in 30 2/3 innings, striking out 26 and walking only 5 batters, with batters hitting a mere .211 against him.

That has helped his overall season totals, lowering his season ERA from 4.67 to 3.91 during these last five outings. That's helping his sophomore season look a little more like his outstanding rookie campaign in 2015, when he put up an ERA of 3.75.
