Fantasy Football: 4 Things We Learned From Week 6
Jamaal Charles Will Likely Remain in a Timeshare This Season
Jamaal Charles is one of the best running backs ever play the game. Seriously. Per Pro Football Reference, Charles' seven seasons generating at least 5.0 yards per carry is the most in NFL history.
And per our numbers, Charles is the only running back with since 2000 with three seasons boasting at least 0.11 Rushing NEP per rush on at least 150 carries. In fact, only one other running back, Priest Holmes, had two such seasons.
But sometimes life isn't fair. And Charles' fantasy owners will likely have to reckon with the fact that he probably won't be the bell cow running back that he's been in seasons past.
Why? Because of Spencer Ware.
Ware’s value to the Kansas City Chiefs was evident in 2015. His 0.20 Rushing NEP per rush was second-best in the league among rushers with at least 70 carries. His -0.12 Rushing NEP per rush in 2016 is dreadful. But those numbers are heavily weighed down by his three fumbles.
Remove those fumbles and his efficiency shoots up dramatically to a very impressive 0.10 Rushing NEP per rush, to go with an excellent 48% Rushing Success Rate.
Charles did see some action this week, tallying 9 carries for 33 yards while reaching the end zone. And his history as an incredibly efficient back means he should still put up good numbers with less opportunity.
But if Ware can continue his impressive efforts and hang onto the rock moving forward, it'd be hard to believe the Chiefs deploy Charles as a three-down back while they have two certified studs in their backfield.
