2017 NFL Mock Draft: Projecting What Could Happen in the First Round
28. Cowboys: Derek Barnett, Defensive End
Top Needs: TE, DE, DT, CB
The Dallas Cowboys have consistently swung and missed on highly-selected pass-rushers, but perhaps they will prioritize on-field production and off-field stability after ranking 17th by Adjusted Defensive Passing NEP per play. They can get just that with Tennessee’s Derek Barnett in this mock.
Many teams are going to be scared off by Barnett’s odd look for a pass-rusher on tape, but he gets the job done. His hand fighting is by far his biggest strength, and he syncs his footwork with his punches and rips perfectly. He’s a cerebral player who reads plays well and sniffs out sneaks, but is not instinctual and relies on thought instead of reaction. Barnett hits hard, but only in a straight line.
Still, his production is undeniable. Over the last three years, Barnett has averaged 11.3 sacks, 14.3 quarterback hits, and 36.7 quarterback hurries -- on par or better than the first pick in the draft.
