Fantasy Football: The Downside for Each Top-20 Pick

Make no mistake: Melvin Gordon was super relevant in fantasy football last year because of volume. Only LeGarrette Blount and David Johnson saw more carries within their opponent's five-yard line than Gordon did last year, and Gordon missed over three games with an injury. He had a 63.82% rushing market share within the team's offense -- seventh-highest in football -- despite missing three freaking games.

Gordon wasn't especially efficient last year, though. According to our Net Expected Points model, among the 19 running backs with 200 or more carries last year, Gordon was 14th in per-rush effectiveness and 17th in Success Rate. The discrepancy between the two is frightening, as it shows that he was able to buoy his production through unsustainable play -- a low Success Rate shows us that he wasn't consistently doing positive things for his team.

Volume drives fantasy football, and there's little competition for Gordon in the Chargers' backfield. But this is certainly something to keep an eye on.
