5 NFL Red Zone Trends to Monitor for Week 13
Play-Calling Trends
We're through bye-week season, so now we have the same 11-game sample size for all teams this year.
Of course, that doesn't always mean 11 games of red zone snaps, as four teams (the Titans, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons) have run red zone snaps in only 10 games, while two teams (the Arizona Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars) have run red zone snaps in just nine games.
Red zone opportunities aren't always about getting there every game, though, as the Falcons' 98 red zone snaps are still the 16th-most in the NFL, while the New York Jets have red zone snaps in every game but still have the third-fewest on the season (68). The only teams with fewer are the Cardinals (61) and Dolphins (55).
On the other end of the spectrum, the New Orleans Saints (160) and Los Angeles Rams have run the most red zone snaps, and it's not close, with the third-ranked team (the Indianapolis Colts) having run 125. The rest of the top-five is rounded out by the New England Patriots (123) and Kansas City Chiefs (123).
The league-average pass-to-run ratio inside the 20 is 1.21-to-1. There is some serious deviation from that mark in both directions, though.
Five teams have a ratio of 1.60-to-1 or higher: the New York Giants (1.60), Pittsburgh Steelers (1.66), Cincinnati Bengals (1.77), Green Bay Packers (1.90) and Minnesota Vikings (1.94).
In the other direction, the five most run-heavy teams inside the 20 have been the San Francisco 49ers (0.91-to-1), Miami Dolphins (0.90), Washington (0.90), Carolina Panthers (0.82) and Buffalo, whose 0.67-to-1 ratio puts them in an entirely different category than anyone else.
