Quarterback streaming isn't for everyone, but if you're in a standard league -- like a 10- or 12-team league that features just one starting signal caller -- grabbing productive quarterbacks who have good matchups off the waiver wire is often doable.
Sure, you won't have the luxury of setting it and forgetting it with Aaron Rodgers as your quarterback, but when the top-end signal-callers draw a tough matchup, their upside can be matched by a waiver-wire option in a more favorable situation.
After a red-hot start to the season (our top streaming pick was the overall QB1 through four weeks), things blew up in our face in Week 5. DeShone Kizer, our top streaming pick, totaled a mere 2.38 points and finished as the week's QB29. Yikes.
Week 5 was the first time this season we failed to deliver a QB1 (top-12) performance. Despite the dud, if you had played our top streaming pick each week, you'd have 105.28 points from your quarterback spot, which would give you the overall QB6, just behind Rodgers.
If you're looking for some quarterback options from the waiver wire -- regardless of league size -- then we have you covered. Here are three quarterbacks owned in less than 30% of Yahoo! leagues who are in a good spot this week.
Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis Colts
Yahoo Ownership: 12%
Jacoby Brissett has made four starts this season, and in two of those outings -- home games against the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers -- he was in a predictably good spot. He delivered solid fantasy days in both of those games.
He put up 27.76 points against Cleveland in Week 3, good enough to be that week's QB4, and he was the QB10 last week thanks to a 17.96-point fantasy day versus San Fran.
Boosting Brissett's floor is his running ability. On the ground, he's racked up 83 yards and 3 scores this season, making him a safer option than what it feels like he is.
Brissett has another dope matchup this week as the Indianapolis Colts hit the road for a Monday clash with the Tennessee Titans. Tennessee has given up the third-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, and that's with the corpse of Jay Cutler throwing for 92 yards against them this past week. In their two games prior to facing Cutler, the Titans surrendered 33.72 fantasy points to Deshaun Watson in Week 4 and 33.52 points to Russell Wilson in Week 3.
The Colts' backup has performed well in favorable spots this season, and the Titans provide a delectable matchup. Our models project Brissett for 15.52 points this week, making him our projected QB14. On a week without many quality streaming options, Brissett is at the top of the heap.
Trevor Siemian, Denver Broncos
Yahoo Ownership: 30%
Trevor Siemian is also in a juicy spot as the Denver Broncos host the New York Giants. The Broncos are 11.5-point favorites, the biggest of the week. That's great news when it comes to Siemian, because he's put up much better numbers in wins throughout his career, although the sample size isn't too big.
Split | Games | Yards Per Game | Touchdowns | Picks | Adjusted Yards/Attempt |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Wins | 11 | 213.6 | 18 | 9 | 7.27 |
Losses | 8 | 242.4 | 7 | 5 | 6.28 |
Unsurprisingly, he's also been better at home.
Split | Games | Yards Per Game | Touchdowns | Picks | Adjusted Yards/Attempt |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Home | 10 | 236.2 | 14 | 8 | 7.39 |
Away | 9 | 213.1 | 11 | 6 | 6.19 |
With Denver a huge favorite and boasting an appealing 25.75-point implied total, there's a lot to like here. The concern is a lack of upside. As you can see in the first table, Siemian has passed for nearly 30 fewer yards in wins, and with Denver expected to control this one, they could elect to pound C.J. Anderson and Jamaal Charles if they jump out to a lead.
Still, Siemian checks a lot of boxes, and we have him as our 21st-ranked quarterback for the week, projecting him for 12.42 fantasy points.
Case Keenum, Minnesota Vikings
Yahoo Ownership: 5%
Sam Bradford started for the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5, but he never looked healthy and had to exit early after aggravating his knee injury. Case Keenum came on in relief, and all signs point to Keenum getting the start in Week 6.
At this point in his career, we pretty much know what Keenum is, but he does get a little boost thanks to the Vikings' talented group of pass catchers. Keenum flashed with a 369-yard, 3-touchdown game in Week 3, but he came crashing back to earth with a touchdown-less 219-yard outing in Week 4. He's not a sexy option, but he's firmly in play this week in what could be a high-scoring affair against the Green Bay Packers.
Due to the uncertainty at quarterback for Minnesota, there's no over/under yet for this game, but given that the contest features Aaron Rodgers indoors and Green Bay is the 12th-worst team against the pass, per our metrics, it's safe to assume it'll be fairly high. Keenum shouldn't be started in many one-quarterback leagues, but he makes sense as a QB2 in two-quarterback formats.
