Between the Lines: Week 2 Snap Count Analysis

In fantasy football, one way to gain an edge over opponents is to look beyond the box score and examine player snap counts. While a quick scan of player stats can tell us who actually performed and produced, snap count data can give us an indicator of guys who are seeing the field on a consistent -- or inconsistent -- basis.

After all, opportunities breed fantasy points and snap counts are one of the more predictive metrics for fantasy football performance. This makes sense, intuitively, as the more a player is on the field, the more opportunities he'll have to touch the ball, and the more opportunities he'll have to score fantasy points.

In each of these weekly articles, I'll evaluate each position by looking at snap count, opportunity, and efficiency trends. All data, unless otherwise noted, comes from Lineups.

- With Miles Sanders back in the mix for the Philadelphia Eagles, we saw Boston Scott and Corey Clement take a back seat. Neither Scott nor Clement played more than 20 percent of the snaps, while Sanders played a healthy 77 percent of the team's snaps. It appears as though Sanders' hamstring injury may no longer be a concern as he starts to seize the workhorse role.

- Unfortunately, Sunday was a day in which players were marred with injuries as the NFL did its best impersonation of The Red Wedding. Even more unfortunate is that this year's fantasy number two overall pick Saquon Barkley was one of the players who suffered an injury, tearing his ACL in the Week 2 contest against Chicago. We press on, though, and note that it was Dion Lewis who saw the majority of the opportunities after Barkley left the game. That said, Wayne Gallman (Barkley's primary replacement last year) was a healthy scratch on Sunday, so I'd be cautious about unloading your FAAB on Lewis.

- This offseason, the Buffalo Bills moved on from the corpse of Frank Gore and replaced him with a spry Zack Moss. In the Bills' first game, Moss outscored Devin Singletary despite playing fewer snaps and getting fewer opportunities. Singletary once again saw a majority share of the opportunities in Week 2, but neither had a great day on the fantasy football field -- both scoring fewer than nine half PPR points. Most notably, though, is that Moss has gotten a lot of his work close to the goal line -- he has seven red zone rushing attempts to Singletary's three.

- When the Arizona Cardinals traded for DeAndre Hopkins, many wondered if the lack of offseason would impact his ability to build chemistry with Kyler Murray. Well, Week 1 quieted all the Hopkins doubters, and Week 2 turned them into full-on truthers. Hopkins has been every bit the elite wide receiver that Arizona brought him in to be. Behind Hopkins, it's been a steady mix of both Christian Kirk and Larry Fitzgerald. Andy Isabella finds himself on the outside looking in, below a 20 percent snap share in both games.

- The Carolina Panthers seem lost as an offense, and they will feel even more lost with Christian McCaffrey sidelined for over a month. One of the lone bright spots, though, is their wide receiver corps, which may be one of the more underrated position groups in the NFL. Leading the way is D.J. Moore, who sports an 88 percent snap share and 31 percent target share through two weeks. Not far behind is Carolina's big free-agent signing, Robby Anderson, who has earned 26 percent of the team's targets on 78 percent of the team's snaps. Unfortunately, Curtis Samuel finds himself as the odd man out again -- despite a 72 percent snap share, he's only gotten nine total opportunities.

- Entering the season, JuJu Smith-Schuster was the Pittsburgh Steelers' clear number one wide receiver, but could we be seeing a changing of the guard? Smith-Schuster and second-year receiver Diontae Johnson are the clear two leaders of the Steelers' receiving corps, each with a snap share over 85 percent. However, Johnson has out-targeted Smith-Schuster by a commanding 23 to 14 in the first two weeks.

- As much as I hate to admit it, it appears as though the year off may not have helped Rob Gronkowski, who appears to be completely dusted. While Gronkowski has played on a respectable 73 percent of the team's snaps through the first two weeks, his two receptions on four targets is quite disheartening. O.J. Howard, on the other hand, has been in on just over half of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' snaps. Neither of these players are fantasy-relevant options at this point, especially since Bruce Arians wants nothing to do with passing them the ball.

- There's a chance that you've never heard the name Robert Tonyan, the Green Bay Packers' third-year tight end, before this week. After an offseason full of hype for Jace Sternberger, Tonyan has been thrust into the Packers' starting tight end role. Through two games, Tonyan led Packers tight ends with a 61 percent snap share, while no other tight end has seen more than a 45 percent snap share. Tonyan is worth a look in deeper leagues and tight-end premium leagues.

- The San Francisco 49ers were one of the teams that got hit big with the injury bug this past week. For San Francisco, it started last week as George Kittle sprained his MCL, forcing him to miss Week 2. Because of this, the 49ers handed the reigns to newly-acquired Jordan Reed, who had his best game in ages. Albeit against a terrible New York Jets defense, Reed dominated with a team-high seven receptions, while hauling in two touchdowns. However, Reed only played 46 percent of the snaps, while Ross Dwelley led San Francisco tight ends with a 64 percent snap share.
