5 Daily Fantasy Baseball Value Plays for 8/28/19

With production being highly variable on a night-to-night basis, daily fantasy baseball plays a bit differently than other sports.

An 0-for-4 dud from a chalky high-priced slugger is a lot more common than a total dud from a top-priced NBA player or even than a stinker from a top quarterback or running back.

That means that it's not uncommon for value plays to end up doing the heavy lifting in carrying your lineup. The fact that they can be the difference between a good and a great lineup isn't much different than other sports, but value plays being able to make up for a whiff on a high-priced play completely is somewhat unique.

Let's get right into it and take a look at the top value options on today's slate.

J.D. Davis, OF, New York Mets ($2,700)

I don’t get it, J.D. Davis is still on fire since starting to play every day, yet is priced extremely cheaply. After last night’s home run, Davis has a .349/.413/.613 slash line over his last 33 games.

Davis has also continued to make elite contact, registering in the 92nd percentile of all hitters in baseball for exit velocity, along with being in the 93rd percentile for hard-hit rate according to baseball savant.

Tonight, Davis will face off against Chicago Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks. Hendricks is a tough matchup, but given the struggles of the Cubs bullpen and Davis’s extended hot stretch, he’ll still be in all of my lineups at that price.

Jon Berti, SS, Miami Marlins ($3,200)

Jon Berti has quietly been one of the best hitters in baseball since coming back from the injured list on July 31st.

In his last 25 games, Berti is hitting .309 with seven steals, 11 extra-base hits, and 22 runs. He’s been a mainstay at the top of the Miami Marlins lineup, and his combination of power and speed has made him a very useful play during this stretch. Berti faces Cincinnati Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani tonight, while Desclafani himself has been on a nice stretch lately, Berti’s multi-faceted upside has me wanting him in my lineups tonight.

Matt Adams, 1B, Washington Nationals ($2,900)

In 236 plate appearances against right-handed pitching, Matt Adams has provided very usable numbers with 16 home runs and a .516 slugging percentage. Tonight, Adams faces a struggling right-handed pitcher in Asher Wojciechowski and has a chance to add to those impressive power numbers.

After a surprisingly solid start to his Baltimore Orioles career, Asher Wojciechowski has struggled mightily. Over his last five starts, Wojciechowski has a 6.00 ERA, and has really lost his command, as shown by his 15 walks in those 24 innings. The nine home runs in that short span that Wojciechowski has surrendered also show how badly he’s pitched since his hot start, and makes me want to get as many Nationals as I can in my lineups tonight,

Brian Dozier, 2B, Washington Nationals ($2,400)

I don’t feel as good about Brian Dozier as I do about Matt Adams, but given the aforementioned struggles Wojciechowski has suffered through, I feel good enough about Dozier tonight to use him at his extremely cheap price of $2,400 dollars.

While Dozier has been in the midst of a recent cold spell, he has been going through an extended hot stretch dating back to May 17th, in which Dozier has a .854 OPS and a 38:55 walk to strikeout ratio (BB:K) and has shown an ability to take advantage of good matchups given his play in that period. If Dozier isn’t in the lineup, then most of the things I said also apply to Howie Kendrick or Asdrubal Cabrera, basically, I just want cheap, middle of the order options for the Washington Nationals tonight.

Jackie Bradley Jr, OF, Boston Red Sox ($3,000)

After an abysmal start to his season, Jackie Bradley has quietly been hitting the ball extremely well. Over his last 81 games, Bradley is hitting for an .865 OPS with 17 home runs, 17 doubles, and a .518 slugging percentage.

Playing in Coors field tonight, Bradley will face off against Colorado Rockies starter Peter Lambert. Through eight starts at home this season, Lambert has been a disaster, and is holding a 6.65 ERA, 1.525 WHIP, and an awful 21:14 K:BB ratio in 40 ⅔ innings. He doesn’t miss bats well and gives up a ton of hard contact, which isn’t a great combination when facing a great lineup at the most run-friendly park in baseball.
