So what is NEP?

By adding down-and-distance value to standard box score information, we can see just how much each play and each team as a whole influence the outcome of games. If a player passes for five yards on 3rd-and-2, it means more to the game than it does on 3rd-and-10, and those plays should be valued accordingly.

For more info on NEP, check out our glossary.

Each play has an NEP value. Each play also changes the win probability (WP) of a game. I factored those values together to see which plays were the most impactful to the moment on the field and the game as a whole.

Below were some exciting moments from the week with big value swings in one category, but didn’t cut it in the other.

10. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers drops first-quarter 66-yard touchdown bomb to wide receiver Davante Adams (WP: +12.07, NEP: +5.97).
9. Buffalo Bills linebacker Lorenzo Alexander intercepts Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger inside Buffalo red zone (WP: +11.65, NEP: +6.04).
8. Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry hauls in 71-yard reception from quarterback Ryan Tannehill (WP: +13.70, NEP: +6.00).
7. Minnesota Vikings running back Matt Asiata fumbles on Jacksonville Jaguars goal line, defensive lineman Malik Jackson recovers the ball for touchback (WP: +21.66, NEP: +5.60).
6. Washington linebacker Ryan Kerrigan strip-sacks Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz with 21 seconds left, linebacker Trent Murphy recovers (WP: +44.31, NEP: +5.31).
