Josh Ferguson, Running Back

There are two running back archetypes I love to look at for late value: one is the thick kind of early down back -- either powerful or fast -- who often is a passing game liability (see Pressley, Jhurrel) and the other is the small, quicker passing-down back. Josh Ferguson represents our second of these archetypes, coming out of Illinois this year.

Why Ferguson intrigues from a fantasy standpoint is that he has incredible quickness and receiving ability, which makes him a perfect Darren Sproles-esque kind of player in the right system. His jump cuts and spin moves are impeccable, and his 4.48 40 Yard Dash and 10-foot Broad Jump confirm his explosiveness. In his final three years at Illinois, he averaged 741 rushing yards on 139 carries (5.34 Yards per Carry), as well as 6 rushing touchdowns. He added an average 46 receptions for 414 yards and 3 receiving touchdowns.

Ferguson joins the Indianapolis Colts, a tale of two backfields. One is that of the aging Frank Gore, who has lost basically any receiving ability he once had but can still handle early-down work. The other is the mass of complementary backs behind him from Robert Turbin to Jordan Todman to Trey Williams. Ferguson has an uphill battle but does possess the talent to work his way onto this team.
