49ers left tackle Trent Williams could play on his current contract
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said newly-acquired left tackle Trent Williams "wants to come back and didn't want to do a deal right away."
While we have only heard from Shanahan on this matter, this news does imply that Williams will play out the 2020 season on his current contract. Williams held out through the entirety of the 2019 season, refusing to play on his current contract for the Washington Redskins. We could still see Williams receive an extension before the start of the season, but it appears things have gotten off on the right foot between Williams and his new team.
The 49ers reportedly knew their longtime left tackle Joe Staley would be retiring, so 32-year-old Williams should be able to step right in and fill a position of need for last year's NFC Champions. Williams has had some issues with health over the past few seasons and hasn't played a full 16 games since 2013, but it is fair to wonder how much of that had to do with Washington's medical staff, with whom Williams had repeatedly expressed frustration. He'll get a fresh new start with real Super Bowl contenders for the first time in his career.
