Melvin Gordon ready to "battle" for touches in Broncos' backfield
Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon told the media this week that he is going to be "ready to battle" this season when asked about his split role with sophomore standout Javonte Williams.
Gordon said "I told (general manager) George (Paton) when I was at the table (to sign his new deal) I told him I’m not going to lay down. I know a lot of people are wanting me to take a backseat. I get it. It’s been like that for a while. It was like that when I was with the Chargers. Everyone wanted Austin (Ekeler) to start. I just come out here and do my thing." He added "The goal is to make them want to play me. I know we’re going to do our thing—me and ‘Vonte’ are going to do it. I don’t really know how we’re going to do the reps and things like that. The goal right now is to really master the playbook and let things play out. I’m definitely going to be ready to battle." After taking a pay cut to return to Denver, Gordon is certainly not ready to stand aside and let Williams take over a bell cow role just yet. The two split touches last year, with Gordon earning 918 yards on 203 rushing attempts and Williams generating 903 yards on the same number of attempts. Williams out touched Gordon in the passing game 43 to 28.
numberFire's models project Gordon for 670.6 rushing yards, 118.44 receiving yards, and 6.77 total touchdowns this season. He is the RB36 in our preseason fantasy projections. Williams is the RB14.
